King George's Medical University, Lucknow
Counted always among the top 10 medical colleges in India, the King George's Medical University in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh started functioning in the year 1911. It was ungraded into a university in 2002 and renamed as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, but due to protests from the public and the college's alumni/ teachers/ students, its name was changed to King George's (KG) Medical University in 2003.
The medical university also has an attached hospital known as the Gandhi Memorial & Associated Hospitals. This medical university hospital is managed by around 250 consultants, 500 doctors, 300 nurses and many more support staff. The hospital also has a school of nursing attached to it.
Spread over 1,00,000 square metres, the university campus is barely 5 kms away from the Charbagh Railway Station and is well connected to the rest of the city. It has a central library that has a collection of 23390 books, 27230-bound volumes, 2680 book banks, 3033 thesis and 651 CDs (as of July 2015.) The university also 15 hostels in the campus itself, both for boys and girls. Other facilities present within the campus include a post office, a cafeteria, medical shops, Allahabad Bank branch, underground parking, coffee shops etc.
The university's library
Apart from the medical faculty, the KG Medical University also has a dental faculty which started in 1949. From 2004-2007, this faculty was upgraded to King George's Dental University, becoming the 1st such dental university in India. But in 2007, it went back to being the Faculty of Dental Sciences.
Admissions to the MBBS courses are done through the UPCPMT and AIPMT medical exams, while admission to its MD/ MS courses are through UPPGMEE.
