The Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJM), Kanpur (previously known as the Kanpur University) is a state university that was established in 1966 for providing higher education to all in general and the people of Kanpur in particular.

Spread of 265 acres, the university has As of 2015, it has 1016 undergraduate & postgraduate colleges affiliated to it with nearly 13.73 lakh students studying in them. Also, there are 40 medical & unani colleges with 3000+  students in and around Kanpur that are affiliated to CSJM university.

The university boasts of a 1500-seater AC auditorium that is state-of-the-art from the inside and painted with lively colours on the outside. The campus also has two nationalized banks (Union Bank of India & Bank of Baroda), a large cafeteria, a healthcare centre, a huge stadium for various sporting activities, a central library and a well-equipped computer centre. The university also has a helipad that can accommodate 3 helicopters (choppers) at a time! There are 3 girls' hostels (capacity for 500 students) and a boys' hostel (capacity for 400 students) that are well-furnished, with mess, TV, continuous electric supply, reading rooms as well as sports/ recreation facilities. Within the university campus lies a shopping complex as well that stocks all the commodities that a student would need - books, clothes, grocery, toiletries etc.
