Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (Formerly UPTU)
This is one university in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh that has been known by various names since the year of its establishment (2000):
- It was originally set up as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) in 2000.
- 10 years later, in the year 2010, it was divided into two universities, Gautam Buddha Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU.)
- In 2013, GBTU and MTU were merged back together to again form the UPTU when a new government led by Akhilesh Yadav came into power.
- In 2015, after the former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam died of a massive cardiac arrest (27 July, 2015), the university was renamed as the "Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (APJAKTU)" as a tribute to him.
With 230+ colleges affiliated to it and its jurisdiction being across the entire state of UP, makes it one of the largest technical universities in not just India, but perhaps in Asia as well.
