Aligarh Muslim University

The Anglo- Muhammadan Oriental College was established in 1875 in Aligarh Uttar Pradesh, with an objective of providing Islamic and Western higher education. Its founder was Sir Syed Ahmed Khan; he was a great Muslim social reformer. The college was modeled on the lines of University of Cambridge.

Later, an Act of Indian Parliament transformed this unique college into a Central Varsity and henceforth it was renamed as the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is an institution of national importance for providing education start from school level to higher education level. Now the university offers around 250 courses in different study disciplines, viz, arts, sciences, commerce etc. The University is a residential institution and offers living facilities to faculty members and staff and separate hostels to boys and girls.

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) draws students not only from different corners of India but also from Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. There is reservation for students from SAARC and Commonwealth Countries.  The town Aligarh where University is situated is 130 km from national capital Delhi. Its location is on the Delhi-Calcutta Railway and Grand Trunk route in Uttar Pradesh.
