17. Animal Husbandry And Veterinary Science

Animal Husbandry:
1. General: Contribution of livestock in Indian economy and human health, mixed farming , socioeconomic aspects of livestock with special reference to Indian peasantry.
2. Genetics and breeding : Elements of genetics and breeding as applied to Improvement of animals,-Breeds of indigenous and exotic cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry and their potential of milk, eggs, meat and wool production, cattle breeding problems, existing policies and suggestions for improvement.
3. Nutrition : Classification of animal feeds, feeding standards, computation of ration and mixing of rations. Conservation of feeds and fodders and utilization of agro-industrial bye-products. Feed additive and supplements, nutritional deficiencies and their rectification. Feed processing and preservation for livestock
and poultry.

4. Management: Management of live-stock (pregnant, milking cows and newly born calves), livestock records, principles of clean milk production, economics of livestock farming, Housing for livestock and poultry.

Veterinary Science:

1. Major contagious diseases affecting Cattle, buffaloes sheep and goats and draught animal, poultry and pigs.
2. Artificial insemination, fertility and sterility.
3. Veterinary hygiene with reference to water, air and habitation, Animal health, hazards and environmental pollution through animals.
4. Principles of immunization and vaccination.
5. Etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and control and treatment of following diseases of: (a) Cattle : Anthrax, Foot and Mouth disease, Haemurrhagic septicaemic, Rinderpest. Black quarter, Tympanitis, Mastitis. Milk fever, fasciolisis, Prioplasmosis, Trypnosomiasis, Tuberculosis, Johne’s disease and diseases of new born calf.
(b) Poultry : Coccidiosis, Ranikhet, Fowl pox, Avian leukosis complex, Marek’s disease and gumboro disease. (c) Swine : Swine fever, hog cholera (d) Dog : Canine distemper, Parvo, Rabies in pets in relation to human health.
6. Poisons used for killing animals.
7. Drugs used for doping of race horses and the techniques of detection. 8. Drugs used to tranquilize wild animals, as well as animals in captivity.
9. Quarantine, measures prevalent in India and abroad, improvement therein.
Dairy Science:
1. Study of milk composition/physical properties and food value.  
2. Quality control of milk, common tests, legal standards.
3. Utencils.and equipment and their cleaning.
4. Dairy processing and distribution of milk.
5. Manufacture of Indian indigenous milk products.
6. Simple dairy operations.
7. Micro organism found in milk and dairy products.
8. Diseases transmitted through milk to human. 9. Operation flood programme and its impact on dairy industry.
